Good Causes

Remember when I mentioned that I'm on a committee planning a big community event? One of the parts to our community event is a food drive. Our goal is to gather truckloads and truckloads of food for several organizations in our community. One of the side projects within this food drive is a Back Pack Buddies program.

You know the kids who get free lunch and breakfast? The kids whose parents might be working poor? Or foster kids? Or have parents with chronic/terminal illnesses? They don't always have food in their homes over the weekends. Back Pack Buddies sends kids home with food they can prepare themselves for the weekends: breakfast, lunch, and snack items.

Today, ESK and I went and bought enough stuff to pull together at least 30 packs. We have also been reaching out to our social networks and we probably have enough stuff in our office to pull together another 20-30 packs.

We were working from a list of items appropriate for the packs. But, we also are going to slip an extra pack of goldfish crackers in the ones we make up. We're cool like that.

Lots of schools/school systems have similar projects. Check it out in your community.

Update: when all is said and done, it appears we will have 124 packs made. WOOT! I just love it when you give people the opportunity to be generous, they often exceed your expectations.
