I started to notice this little trend a couple of years ago; but now I think we might actually be on to something. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think gorillas, and monkeys in general, are becoming the animal symbol of valentines day. I notice in massive marts a growing number of gorilla/monkey themed valentines day gifts, cards, candy holders, etc. Granted there are other cutsy animals and lots of teddy bears, but more and more, I am seeing monkeys.
So, what does this mean to me and other monkeys?
One, it's nice to see acceptance, no matter how commercial, from the human world. I mean, once you folks figure out that we are affectionate to our young and can use tools - surely we should rank as possible animal symbols for your commercialization of holidays.
Two, does this threaten the monkeys who have infiltrated human society? I don't know how many others there are like me out there -- since we tend to be fairly quiet about our daily habits - but surely, if I could do it - others have too. Will freshly outed monkeys be accepted as cute and jovial members of society? Or will it be E.T. all over again (remember the scene where they enveloped the house with a huge hermetically sealed bubble and men in big condom suits "decontaminated" the home.)
Three, will monkeys suffer the fate of bunnies? Will hoards of little children be given gifts of baby monkeys only to have our necks broken by too firm a grasp or too ardent a hug? Will we be dyed unnatural colors to blend in with the rest of the valentines day decor?
Four, Will some enterprising company figure out that valentines day is the perfect time to push for people to donate to preserve monkeys in the wild only to embezzle the funds later?
Five, or have you humans finally come around to the cuteness factor of monkeys and are finally giving us the adoration we so richly deserve?
