The Origins of the First World War

Actually, this isn't about war, the first or subsequent. Only, when I was typing a title for this post, when I typed the word "the" - three options popped up -- two were titles of previous posts -- and then this one. I figured I'd go with it and see what happens. I wonder if you can make new years resolutions after the fact? (upon rereading, I see it's a bit vague -- I meant the possibility of resolving to go with the flow more and being less up tight and controlling of the enviroment as a new years resolution. The irony is, I'm actually fairly good at going with the flow.)

We had our usual New Years -- party with friends -- saw most of the same faces -- although we drank a whole lot less than we usually do. Pretending to be adult humans sucks. We spent the night in a fairly swank hotel within walking distance of our friends -- just in case we did get drunk. It's a nice, fairly expensive hotel. We've stayed there many times before with mixed results. This was not one of the better visits.

We returned about 1am. A bit before 2am, just as we were getting ready to fall asleep, the cell phone rang -- with a wrong number. Nearly 2 am is a tad late to be dialing random numbers. At 3 am, people near our room started partying rather loudly -- we couldn't tell if they were next door, up stairs, or in the parking lot. I got up and put in ear plugs and fell back asleep. At 4am, my work pager went off. I called in only to learn that their computer had reset and they paged me by accident rather than the person they meant to page.

Since the party finally was quiet (the phenom later said that they carried on about 45 minutes) - I removed the ear plugs. Around 8am, someone in a room next to ours started egging on their young children -- first there were squeals which were followed by screams and crying. I'm so glad my new years resolution was not to use less profanity.

We wandered around looking for a place that was open for food - ended up in a place that generally is visited by drunken sorts late at night. It was good, filling food -- exactly what you want when drunk.

We went back to our friend's home and spent the day playing with The Child. Part of the afternoon featured the Phenom and the Child curled up on the couch together watching the movie Cinderella. We had a wonderous good luck meal.

New Years Good Luck meal requires collard greens and black eyed peas -- the greens for folding money in the new year and the peas for coin money. Our friend also makes shrimp creole, ribs, salad, cheese cake, and several other things. She is really quite a good cook and we look forward to her collards every year. My contribution was 3 quarts of fresh squeezed OJ and prosecco for making mimosas.

I've heard people say that your family are the people you gather around you. I must say - this is especially true for me. I have to say, I have a really wonderful family. I'd like to thank The Phenom, The Chick, The Preacher Lady, Miss Grassy Creek, The Old Folks, The Child and the Child's parents, and the countless others who have graciously opened their hearts and homes to me.
