Travels

This weekend, we were off to the Phenom's home town. It is a town smaller than this one, but being a tourist destination, it has so much more. I always end up buying lots. I got cute shoes . . . fluffy yarn. . . and a top secret birthday present for ESK.

They also have lots of local places to eat . . . unlike the culinary hell we live in. Our first meal was lunch at the Blue Bird Diner. Ice cream from a local dairy. Onion rings that were slices of onions first, not frozen things. Homemade pies and cakes under polished domes. Even if this town had just one place that didn't buy everything frozen before they fried it, I wouldn't think of it as culinary hell.

The shops on Main Street span cutesy boutiques to kitschy tourist junk shops.

Once upon a time, Moravians were the settlers in the area. There is still a large Moravian population in the area. Funny how the practices of a religious group can influence even non-members. One practice of the Moravians is that they all go to their cemeteries on the Saturday before Easter and each grave is scrubbed clean and tended to in advance of Easter Sunday. One of the reasons we frequently travel the the Phenom's home town on Easter weekend, is so that we can tend his parents' graves.

When the sun rises tomorrow, his parents' hill will be fresh and clean and sporting spring blooms.
