I attended a community meeting tonight. There were a variety of invited speakers . . . ranging from mental health providers to small business representatives to elected officials. Some speakers were glib and the words came easily. Others, clearly nervous, relied on note cards.
Towards the end, a woman stood. She was older, black, well dressed, and wore her experience on her face. She is one of the first black women doctors in this area. Her words were slow, and soft, but the most loving and powerful words spoken during the evening.
Just listening to her voice, her words, her sentiments made me tremendously glad I'd stepped out of my comfort zone for an evening.
