NOLA, Part One: General Overview

I worried that this might be the Trip of Doom. The first thing we ever do is head to Pat O's and have a couple or three drinks. Since we arrived in the afternoon, we went to the bar and I had a couple double, extra spicy bloody marys. The Phenom sucked back three drinks with lightening speed. That may have been a mistake. Whereas the drinks were enjoyed, the hang over seemed to last into the next morning.

My panic was that the hangover was going to lead to a blah response to the fancy-smancy restaurant I'd selected for lunch. Herbsaint is one of Donald Link's restaurants. I'll post pictures and more detail later, but it was a supreme experience. LOVELY in every possible way . . . and The Phenom loved it. YAY.

We then took a cab to Magazine Street. I'd been reading about that area of town and the quaint little shops, and decided we should check it out. I went to Storyville for shirts. They are fairly socially responsible, hip and cool. I was disappointed I couldn't find the exact Fleurty Girl shirt I wanted, but that's cool, I'll order it. I did get a "Save our Coast" shirt that got Storyville in all kinds of hot water, like they care. If you want cool and witty t-shirts that support good causes, check out either shop online.

We popped into a sweet shop I've been drooling over online for the last month, Sucre. Sadly, we were disappointed. Largely, our impression was that it was much like the rest of Magazine Street . . . better marketing than reality. The neighborhood around Magazine Street seems nice and like the cool place to be if you're a young, hard working human. But, we wouldn't go back. The gelato was not bad. Very rich. The chocolates and other tasties were beautiful. The service was so chaotic that we gave up trying to purchase more than just our gelato. When we first went in, we went straight to the chocolates counter. There was a staff person waiting on another customer. However, for some odd reason, that staff person wandered off without even acknowledging us. We stood around. . . pointed at the different chocolates we thought we'd buy . . . tried to wave at staffers as they sailed past us. Finally, we gave up. We then moved on to the pastry counter. Despite multiple young women behind the counter, no offer of assistance was made. So, finally, we managed to capture the attention of someone behind the gelato counter. The Phenom ordered a large Sunday confection and the young woman asked us to go ahead and pay, take a seat, and she'd bring us our order when it was prepared. And, even though we were behind the person being rung up in line formation, once we moved to the checkout counter, the girl ringing people up wandered off. It was probably the most baffling service we've ever encountered in NOLA and they lost out on taking more of our money because of it.

The most notable event (beyond Herbsaint) was seeing some young woman being marched, handcuffed, up Royal Street towards the police department. We imagine she was involved in some drunken scuffle. But, she was tremendously abusive to the police officer and frankly, we were kinda thinking that if he tazered her to shut her up, it'd be fair.

I'll write more extensively about food later, with pictures.
