The New Popularity

I have come to the conclusion that only at my advanced state of silverness am I mature enough for FaceBook. I understand that, ehem, people of my "age group" are likely not using facebook the same way the kids are using it. No one on my friends list is posting nekkid pictures of themselves or using facebook to torment their peers. All the people on my facebook page are people I've known during my years of schooling or people I know currently. I admit, there are a couple who I don't have as clear a memory as others . . . but I remember enough to add them to the list.

When I was attending high school, I remember being awed by one girl who although was part of the most popular set, she was unfailingly polite and nice and sweet to everyone, including me.

Now that I'm much more mature and blend in with human society much better, I see the great value in being polite to most people . . . at least until they prove themselves unworthy of even basic politeness. I send greenie requests to everyone on my list. I send happy drinks to everyone on my list. I enjoy seeing their pictures and reading the clever quips they post.

So, I can't even imagine that I would "unfriend" ten of them for something as lousy as a badly made hamburger. Apparently, over 300 thousand people got unfriended for a hamburger from Burger King before the campaign was suspended. Burger King said that the campaign grew out of a fairly cynical (my interpretation) conversation about friendship and are the people you are friends with on face book people you'd actually want to hang out with in real life.

I'm thinking that life is too short to be openly mean to people . . . even on facebook.
