The Ballad of Teresa, The Drunk

She was older than us by at least a decade. She had the puffy, blond hair favored by southern women of her generation. I would bet that she, herself, had not seen her natural hair color since at least 1976.

She introduced herself to everyone at our table. "I'm Teresa, and I'm drunk" . . . she repeated this to each of us in turn. Then, she introduced us to her companion, Margarita. Not long after that, her own girl friends showed up . . . and with giggles not dissimilar from a group of high school girls, one friend informed us that Teresa, I'm drunk had just gotten engaged. Another of her friends announced that they were all sisters . . . but they weren't really.

They also had a nice looking young man with them who seemed slightly out of place with this group of giggling, aging girls with bleached hair. We wondered if perhaps he'd been hired for the evening. He was terribly attentive and allowed them all to rub, obscenely, up against him.

Teresa, I'm Drunk told the guys in the band she was celebrating her 21st birthday, and insisted we all sing to her. She also plopped down at our table, while her friends were making a run for fresh drinks, and told us her tale of woe.

She'd been a child bride and a young mother. The man she married was just old enough that today it'd be considered a crime. He was controlling and an alcoholic. So, when her children were out of the home, she decided it was time for her to be her own person. After forging a new path for herself, she'd met a decent man, or so she hopes, and they are planning on getting married. Hopefully, her children will come to understand that she deserves a second chance at being the person she could have been a long time ago, happy.

And, then a storm brewed up and we all went ducking indoors and Teresa, I'm drunk was out of our lives. We wondered if she ended up going home with one or more of the guys from the band . . . or did she find herself steering the porcelain bus?
