the start of an idea

While walking Sir Pooch-A-Lot last night, the Phenom and I had this conversation that led me to the start of an idea.

I'll probably express it badly - but work with me a moment.

First, there is tremendous history of countries where the "head of state" is also the religious leader. There is history in the western world - and there are still quite a few countries around today whose citizenry look to their leader not just for economic/military/social leadership - but also religious leadership.

When democracy became the preferred system of government for many countries, the notion of the religious head of state kinda became less popular. (Although, the Queen of England is still technically the head of the Church of England - but her political duties are much less than in Queens and Kings in the past.)

Also, you should know that I did read Jimmy Carter's book on how religious fundamentalism is ruining the world.

So, I think we have created a new era in which there is a popular expectation that our elected leaders also be religious or moral leaders too.

Think about it - why else would the nation be horrified and collectively scream "off with his head" when Clinton was caught breaking our moral code --- but yet, the current president has admitted to all sorts of stuff that is illegal and immoral - and yet, he still has an uncanny base of support? He's a born again -- he is willing to whip out the religion card when he needs to -- and the religious leaders in this country goose step right in line with him.

Okay - perhaps that last bit was harsh. Blame it on the caffeine free beverage and the fact I've recently lost part of my liver.
