I make a startling discovery

I read a blog regularly called The Non-Working Monkey blog. It's a British bird who has a very dry sense of humor and is chronicling her activities now that she is unemployed. She starts every post with a line like the title -- "I talk with a pedestrian" "I eat crisps" and the like.

When I was first with the old folks, they tried to teach me to fit smoothly into human company. This meant learning to regulate my voice and expressions. Monkeys tend to be rather loud. We like being heard. We also tend to have a few rather exaggerated facial expressions - it's all still about being heard and seen.

I thought I did a pretty good job. Then, today while I'm reading through the Times online, I realize that each news story I read, I have a series of rather exaggerated facial expressions. I can't figure out why I care if the computer screen sees my reaction to the news.

Maybe I should just blame it on the whole monkey, attention loving thing. You just can't unlearn that instinct.
