Sick, Sad World

Click on the title for the link.

The article is about the DJ in New York who threatened, on air, the child of a rival DJ. He also made racist and hateful comments about the rival's wife and offered a "reward" to any listener who could tell him where the rival's child attended pre-school. The prosecutor has made a deal with the DJ that if he performs 24 hours of community service and has no contact of any kind with the child/her family, the charges will be dropped in six months time.

The DJ in question is thumping his chest and saying that this is a victory for freedom of speech and acting as if he got off scott-free.

First, I'm troubled that he would totally ignore that a punishment of a sort has been imposed, and thus, he did not get off scott-free. Secondly, the Supreme Court has specifically said that freedom of speech does not extend to hate speech, speech which incites violence, or threats. All of which this low-life committed.

Now, compare this to the stories you hear from time to time about little children being charged with crimes because they kissed another child on the playground or pre-teens who are dragged away in shackles because they drew pictures depicting a violent end for their tormentors.

How is it that a full grown adult can rave, threaten, spew hate over public airwaves and face a minimum punishment which may actually end up contributing to his success (he claims to have a television deal in the works as a result of this event) but small children who are reared in a society obsessed with sex and violence are treated as thug criminals?

That's twisted, folks. TWISTED.
