Lately, I've noticed a bit of a pattern and I think it bears investigating. As you all know, I fancy myself something of a minor "not quite super" hero and go motoring about trying to avenge the downtrodden and inflict justice upon the criminal element.
But, this means that I end up spending too much of my time learning the ins and outs of the downtrodden and the criminal element. I have come to realize that all too often, the course of a human's life is often derailed or created based on one or two decisions. It seems that when the decisions are made, they seem minor enough -- should I apologize for the really mean thing I just said? Should I sneak out of the house and go to the party I really want to go to but my mom said no to? I'm late, it won't hurt if I drive a bit faster. The problem is, often we don't anticipate the possible outcomes and whether or not we can live with them.
If you don't apologize for your meanness, you could lose a friend forever who someday could really be needed. If you sneak out of the house, you could find yourself in over your head and not have a safety net to catch you. If you drive too fast, you put yourself and others in danger.
On the other hand, it amazes me how easily some humans disregard other humans. I am not so much surprised over what humans think up to do to each other -- but I am really amazed all the time that something in their brains told them this was a good and worthwhile pursuit. Like people who beat children to death. Or people who steal Grandma's social security checks while starving her. Or people who lure women and children into forced sexual slavery.
I know, it takes some of the fun out of life -- but, how about we all try to think an extra 10 minutes ahead -- will what you're about to do really still be a good idea in 10 minutes? How about 30 minutes? Are you willing to live with the consequences?
