Good ol' fashioned shaming

Click on the title for the link to the page. Today, we read a story in the NYTimes about a guy who was trying to track down a sidekick (phone/email/internet gadget) a friend of his accidentally left in a taxi. After logging onto her account - she found some teenager had been using her sidekick to call folks and post pictures of herself. The guy who made up this web site emailed her and asked to have the sidekick back. At first the girl claims to have found it and that the "white bitch" was out of luck. Later, the girl claimed that she bought it off a cab driver. Lastly, while bailing her out of jail, the girl's mother claimed SHE bought it on a subway platform.

The guy who was trying to get the thing back for his friend posted on a web site all of the exchanges from the girl and her family --- including threats of violence and "trouble" from the military police.

People who read the web site would email free advice about legal remedies as well as give address information to the guy. They also would drive by her home and yell "thief" at her.

I like this whole thing because it's a good ol' fashioned social shaming. The girl and her family clearly are in need of a few lessons in moral behavior. Until god brings back smoting, I like the public shaming.
