NOLA, Food, Part Two

A year, or so, ago a waitperson at one of our favorite breakfast places commented that we come into their restaurant more often than the locals. Over the years, we have managed to befriend servers/waitstaff/bartenders all over NOLA. And, just like a family obligation tour, when we go back we feel we must stop in to say hi.

One of my favorites is Mother's. I waxed on about the ferdi and ham last time. I couldn't bring myself to try something different this time because I'd been craving their ham since christmas. This time, I did try the "black ham" . . . thusly named because it takes on a rich mahogany color from the seasoning and spices it's cooked in. It has a bit more chew than the regular ham, but the seasoning makes the trade worth it. The breakfast special also comes with eggs and grits and biscuits. The biscuits are the size of softballs and are served up with butter and homemade raspberry jelly. The jelly tasted just like what I've been eating off the Old Woman's table for years. Sweet and tart and exploding with fruitiness.

We, also, always plan a trip out to the end of the garden district to visit the Camilla Grill. It's a local diner and the guys working behind the counter keep up the banter and occasionally break into song/dance so that you often get a show too. I love their ruben sandwiches. I swear their bacon cheese burger I had last trip was the best hamburger I've ever eaten, but the ruben will always have my heart. The Phenom dug into a bowl of their famous chili . . . they put it atop omelets, fries, you name it . . . and a chocolate freeze. We both left too full, but very happy. As you can see, I didn't think to take the picture until we half way through our meal.

There are two places we visit nightly. First, Pat O'Brien's. We just love those hurricanes. Okay, truth be told, Pat's is often the first place we go even if it's just lunch time. The bartender in the main bar makes me large, extra spicy, extra green beans bloody marys. MMMMM. At night, typically the drink order is a hurricane followed by a rainbow. The one on the left is the rainbow. It may sound like a little thing . . . and after the tartness of a hurricane does taste like crisp cold water. But, let me assure you . . . you can get in just as much trouble with rainbows as hurricanes.

The last stop of the night might be the most important one, Cafe Du Monde. The cafe au lait and beignets are the cure to a hang over. Well, preventative of a hang over. And, who doesn't love fried dough? Cafe Du Monde is open 24/7 and is staffed by everyone from the late night zombies to folks new to the country. The coffee is chicory coffee which tastes dark and strong but has half the caffeine. Just be careful you don't inhale the powdered sugar.
