The magic hour

So, earlier this week, I found myself doing a suburban version of the "walk of shame" . . . the Drive of Shame. Rather, for those who follow rules and are in bed at a decent hour, I was returning to my home at an hour that could be considered simultaneously "too late" and "too early."

Never you mind why. I have my reasons. I think. I'm pretty sure I do.

Anyway, as I drove quietly through our little neighborhood, hoping none of the neighbors I actually know would see me, I made a startling realization.

In the hour or so around 5-6 am . . . in suburbia . . . it's the Underwear Hour. That magical hour in the morning when people think they can dart out of the house in their underwear because they are banking on no one else being up so early. I saw people picking up newspapers, walking dogs, digging through the glove compartments of their cars, etc . . . all in their undies and all concentrating on acting as if they don't see me driving home much too early/late or any of their neighbors pulling the same maneuver.

Next drive of shame, I'm bringing my camera just in case I need some protection for the future.

Truly amazing. I leave the house at 4:30 am every weekday, and have yet to see anything like that in my neighbourhood. Man, if people did that around here, maybe I wouldn't be so grumpy every morning at work!
