Breaking in

I heard from an old friend today . . . she works as an executive assistant in a large company . . . she works for the head of a department, but frequently will help out the other folks in the department.

Her company has several new entry level hires. Usually, entry level folks come in awed by the job, the company, and the folks who have been there a while. Usually, the new hires are all too aware of how easily they can be replaced that they work really hard to not make waves.

Until this year. Until this one hire. This new hire seems to think that the way to look very important is to push around the support staff. Stupid new hire, don't they know that the support staff can make your days very difficult or much easier?

I suggested that perhaps there are hidden cameras and this new hire is some overdone reality show? The new hire addressed my friend as "um, secretary" and has recently started claiming that the boss . . . who rarely leaves his office and hardly notices the new hires . . . would want my friend to take time from her job to do the new hire's job.

We're taking bets on how long before the new hire is gone. Perhaps it really is true . . . that you can judge a person's character by how they treat people who are lower ranked than they are. Maybe I need to bring in treats to the office myself this week?
