Several weeks ago, the Phenom related a conversation I'd not been party to, fortunately.
The Phenom was speaking with a local minister. This minister had come to see the Phenom's show, and there was the small talk of near strangers afterwards. The Phenom mentioned our then planned trip to New Orleans. The Phenom was horrified to hear the minister say that we should have just abandoned New Orleans and not rebuilt it. His logic seemed to trade on stories of New Orleans more notorious reputation rather than any kind of personal experience. And, interestingly, this minister only seemed to think that New Orleans deserved to be declared a wasteland . . . not the rest of the "god-fearing" folks of the gulf coast.
So, as I read of the aftermath of Hurricane Dolly . . . and the weeks they think it will take to dry out . . . and the stinging critters in the waters and the many dangers lurking in the flood waters . . . I can't help but, bitterly, wonder what the minister would say of south Texas today.
