Popularity

I was never a popular monkey. Being a monkey, I kinda tried to never really call that much attention to myself. And, there was also that whole social awkwardness issue too.

Over the past several months, a friendship with someone I've known for years has really flourished. The thing is, this person is SUPER POPULAR. This person is really bright, very nice, and hangs with the most interesting sorts of people - - artists, philosophers, academics, and the like.

Because of the friendship with the Popular One, we have found ourselves drawn into the adult, human equivalent to the "popular kids' clique."

Frankly, this is totally new territory for us. We aren't the most social of couples. We are a tad on the nerdy side. Suddenly being invited to parties . . . and being included . . . and told the secret stories and shown the secret handshakes has me a bit awed.

Sadly, the Popular One is leaving the area. Tonight, we attended yet another going away party for her. Afterwards, we decided to hang out at a local bar and have a couple extra drinks. We observed that we haven't yet seen a movie this summer . . . something we usually do a lot. But, we have spent the majority of our summer attending going away parties for the Popular One.

Since she reports to her new job this week . . .I guess I'll get to see the new batman and x-files movie now.

Oh the "in" crowd. Never been there ... never really wanted to be there either. I think I know what you mean, it would be kind of an odd feeling. How many going away parties can one person have!? LOL

Go watch a movie. :)
