Rules of the Road

I've returned from the big S&C tour. And, it occurs to me that there are specific rules for the multi-player getaway weekend.

One, just like combat, no one gets left behind. This includes at the bar, leaving the bar, standing in line for the loo, or going home. It's just good manners, and you never know when it prevents a much larger problem. We observe this rule when one person skips to the loo, or decides to take a small detour. We don't resume our party-quest until all are accounted for again.

Two, when out with your bestest buds . . . you can objectify the cute ones, but being the object of such attentions is frowned upon. Be cause of our "been around most of the blocks in the neighborhood" status, we feel it perfectly within our rights to lay down some knowledge on those cute, young, somewhat clueless serving staff types. We do it lovingly and always tip appropriately. Similarly, when one is approached by a person hoping to join or break up a happy party . . . it's important to shut that person down . . . or be ready to step in on behalf of another if the pursuer is a bit to persistent.

Which leads us to number three, which isn't really appropriate here but is worth repeating . . . Dan Savage's campsite rule. When the more experienced and mature amongst us take on the task of, um, more hands on type instruction of those with less experience. . . it is our responsibility to leave the less experienced as you would a campsite . . . cleaner and in better condition than you found them. I'm not giving away any secrets or saying this was a necessary rule this past weekend, just that it is worth repeating.

And lastly, the friend getaway weekend can encompass both giddiness as well as moments of reflection . . . good friends offer support and encouragement in both. That's the value of the getaway . . . not so much what you did . . . but who you're with, and the renewal that a change of pace and good friends can bring.

Ditto. But I'm kinda sad we didn't get to observe the campsite rule. Oh, well.....
