My Jamaican Friend once said that that humans are only happy in retrospect. I've thought about this statement a lot over the years. Because, I don't know if it's the whole monkey thing or what - but I think he's wrong. I frequently am aware when I'm happy, the moment I'm happy.
For example, few things make me happier than driving. I love to get some tunes, an open road, and a destination. I love to see houses and farms and trees slip past me. I love how the sky always looks darker in my rear view mirror. I love to sing along to music. (and, truth be told, the only time I should sing aloud is alone in the car.)
I also know I'm happy when I'm with the humans I love. And, when I'm eating really well made food -- be it a fancy-smancy restaurant or a meal made by loving hands.
I'm happy when I'm making things .. . . . especially when I am making them for people I care about.
And, I'm happy when I'm chasing the Phenom around the house.
Perhaps my Jamaican Friend needs to spend more time with the national refreshment of his home country, eh?

I'm never happy retrospectively. Quite the opposite. I'm happiest looking forward to very good things -- like what you've described. But without the farms. But only because in SoCal, they're not quite plentiful.
I know what you mean about driving...it's a happy moment when I'm doing that too. Love it. Love it more when I'm in a car I know won't break down.
