Apparently, professional nerds (history professors) gathered over the weekend in Atlanta, GA for a convention. One older, English professor was caught committing heinious crime - and received a good ol' American police beat down. He jay walked. He compounded his crime by being confused by the fact the police officer who brought his crime to attention was wearing a heavy coat, obscuring the police officer uniform. Violence, mayhem, arrest.
But the thing I think many folks are finding most remarkable is that this professor, who has written a world history text - has just now discovered that there are marginalized people on the planet, and that most of those marginalized types seem to be non-white.
I am a tad surprised that someone who considers themselves a student of the world, of the conditions of people around the world, would find this to be a new concept. Isn't history filled with uprising after uprising? Aren't most revolutions about one group deciding another has something they want?
The link above is to a youtube interview with the poor professor. Granted, we're only seeing his point of view - and I think he's probably hiding behind what he supposes is evidence of his superiority - humor - but, I have to say, if his version is accurate, the Atlanta Police have some 'esplaning to do.
