Fashion Maven

Over the years, one of the inside jokes in my household has been that I'm a fashion maven. I frequently will display some newly purchased or made item and explain to the Phenom that it's "fashionable" -- to which the Phenom always responds with "YOU ARE the fashion maven."

And, you all know that I have a weakness for celebrity gossip and one of the blogs I check out regularly is "Go Fug Yourself."

Here are a few thoughts I've been collecting about fashion. Especially celebrity fashion.

First of all - I understand that celebrities have stuff given to them all the time. I also realize that they see themselves on the "cutting edge" of fashion and trend. I kinda imagine being a celebrity as constantly being in jr. high and having to have the perfect outfits to express your individuality but not be a freakazoid either. I assume that these folks have image consultants and hang around with folks who know a thing or two about fashion. I assume that over the years, celebrities wouldn't be able to help themselves in picking up the odd fashion rule or two.

So why is it that so many celebrities look as if they were given 5 minutes in a charity shop to pull together an outfit for a public event/party in which they would be paraded in front of a hundred cameras prior to the nibblies?

The other issue I have is folks who have some money - but dress as if they are walking billboards.

While watching the US Open coverage -- I'm struck by how many folks in attendance are dressed not for comfort or to please themselves - but to proclaim loudly "YES, I AM A HANGER ON." Look at the family/friends in the player boxes and you can see some of the worst, most expensive fashion statements you could ever find. Once the sun goes down, you don't need those over sized sunglasses. Also, I don't understand why male and female tennis players feel it necessary to wear thousands and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry on the court.

You humans and your need to out do each other with the silliest things. Speaking of which - I now am on my second page of "friends" on myspace !! Woo Hooo!
