While reading This Fish's blog tonight, I learn that you humans have elevated the gift giving phenomena to 'online wish lists'. Basically, it's like registering for baby or wedding gifts -- but for less monumental occasions like the annual celebration of one's birth or just because you're cute and have loads of friends who want to find more ways to spend their money and buy your affections.
I'm thinking that perhaps I should be checking out some of these "wish list" sites to see what sorts of monkey appropriate gifts are out there.
On a completely unrelated subject, I read an article about the mostly African practice of "breast ironing" today. Mothers of young girls will take very very very hot rocks and apply them, rub them across their developing daughter's breasts to stunt their growth and hopefully avoid sexualized attention from adult men. (in reality, it can cause serious and irreversible bodily damage) In the United States, we have sex offender registries and quite an up roar over any child under the age of 18 being sexualized for commercial reasons. So, imagine my shock when I found a catalog advertising halloween costumes for young children have a costume called "Major Flirt" for girls as young as pre-school. The costume included short skirt, military styled top with "major flirt" written on it, and faux "boots" in the go-go style. Scary!
