In a May 18, 2006 article, the New York Times reported "A new comparison of the human and chimp genomes suggests that after the two lineages separated, they may have begun interbreeding."
I can only imagine the care and discussions as to how exactly to word that bit of news. The idea is that the one type of animal started to develop adaptive changes -- but that the females of the species were continuing to breed with the chimps - and then some time later, the final (second) split between what makes a critter a chimp and what makes a critter human happened.
Frankly, looking around me, I see the evidence of the "interbreeding" all too often and suspect that the "split" missed a few folks. I'm not naming names, but you know who you are.
