Bad, Bad, Bad

I snagged this photo from Yahoo news. I wanted you all to see the violence captive animals face. This monkey was hunted, mauled, killed, and eaten in a Dutch Zoo, while keepers were helpless to intervene. Although the zoo officials seem to be "sorry" over the crime, they also seem to shrug and blather something about wild animals and the cycle of nature.

In the wild, a Barbary Macaque and Sloth Bear would never share a habitat. In the wild, there wouldn't be electric fences that would interfere with or prevent escape attempts. In the wild, the tallest structure wouldn't be some lame wooden jungle gym constructed to maximize the viewing pleasure of humans rather than offer real refuge or exercise.

The zoo officials say they will move the Barbary Macaques away from the sloth bears. Clearly, sanitizing this crime for human observers is the only issue on their minds. If they truly cared, they would close down their little roadside exhibit and devote themselves to meaningful work to preserve natural habitats.
